James Thomas Gatewood
b. 1 Jun 1843 Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana
d. 30 Sep 1926 Papillion, Sarpy County, Nebraska

James was born in Indiana and lived there until the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private 8 Jan 1863. Mustered in Co F 51st Indiana Infantry 1 Aug 1863. Mustered out 13 Dec 1865. He took part in the battles of Gettysberg, Chatanooga, and Lookout Mountain. James was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh.

After his discharge he returned to Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana, where he married Elinor Badger on 6 Nov 1869. Soon after their marriage they moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where they lived for several years. James was employed at Union Pacific Railroad. They moved to Papillion about 1885, where they lived until his death.

James died at the age of 83 years after an illness of a few days of pneumonia.
