Albert W. CRITES

Greenwood Cemetery
Dawes County,
Nebraska

The following information comes from an article by George Ledbetter in the Chadron Record newspaper, Chadron, Nebraska: the 2012-Fur-Trade-Days Supplement.
"Albert W. Crites was born in Wisconsin in 1848 and brought up on a farm. He attended university and became a teacher for a time, before studying under an experienced lawyer, the accepted method of legal training at the time, and earning admission to the bar in 1872. After practicing law in venues up to the U.S. Supreme Court, he was appointed by President Grover Cleveland in 1886 to be chief of the department of captured property, claims and lands. The position brought him to the newly opened United States Land Office Chadron in 1887. When Republican Benjamin Harrison defeated Cleveland for the presidency in 1889, Crites, a life-long Democrat, lost the political patronage job. He resumed legal practice and in 1891 was appointed as judge.
Crites was active in Democratic politics, as a party delegate and state central committee member, and heavily involved in community affairs. He served on the Board of Education, was elected Mayor, and was appointed to the board of directors of First National Bank of Chadron. A progressive and social activist, Crites had a good relationship with Indians in the area. He was the first person in Chadron to own an automobile."
