John S. MURPHY

Calvary Cemetery
Dawes County,
Nebraska

John S. Murphy (Nov. 27, 1867- July 15, 1896) is the SON of Simon and Ellen Harrold Murphy. John S. Murphy is the NEPHEW of James T. Murphy and Margaret Harrold Murphy. James T. and Simon Murphy are brothers and their wives were the Harrold Sisters. John S. Murphy was the City Attorney at Chadron, NE. and was reputed to have one of the most brilliant legal minds of his time. John S. Murphy was a law clerk for Andrew Morrissey who would go on to become the Supreme Court Justice for the state of Nebraska. John S. Murphy is documented in several Nebraska history books as being involved in a gun fight that resulted in his uncle James T. Murphy's death. Two of John S. Murphy's fingers were shot off as John tried to save his uncle James T. Murphy from being murdered by cowboy outlaw "Frenchy Marion". While there are numerous historical accountings of the James T. Murphy family, there are many inaccuracies and the names are often interchanged and mixed with different parents. James T. Murphy was the brother of Simon Murphy who was the city engineer at Kearney, Nebraska for many years and he was the uncle of John S. Murphy who was the city attorney at Chadron, NE. John S. Murphy was very close to his uncle and is buried in Chadron rather than at Kearney, Nebraska, where Simon and Ellen Harrold Murphy (his mother) are buried.
