James T MURPHY

Calvary Cemetery
Dawes County,
Nebraska

James T. Murphy(1837-Dec. 1884), aka JT Murphy, Doc Murphy and James T. Murphy M.D., is buried in an unmarked grave next to his wife Margaret Murphy at Calvary Cemetery, Chadron,NE., in the Murphy/Morrissey Family Plot. The large 4 sided marker in the photo is inscribed on the bottom sides "Murphy", "Morrissey", "Smith"-This is where the James T. Murphy family is buried. James T Murphy's wife's gravestone is inscribed " Wife of James T. Murphy Died July 15, 1896, Aged 53 yr, 8 mo." Due to the nature of James T. Murphy being buried in an unmarked grave and the fact that he was originally buried at Boot Hill Cemetery in Valentine, NE.and then about 1894 being moved to Calvary, Cemetery there is much confusion about this family. In addition many errors have been made recording this family, such as the Gravestone found on this site that says Margaret was the wife of "T Murphy" when the inscription clearly says "Wife of James T. Murphy...." James T. Murphy was the father of: Mary Molly Murphy Smith, Thomas Harrold Murphy, Cora Silver Murphy Morrissey, Frank Murphy (married to Catherine Katie Lecher) and James A. Murphy (erroneously called John A. Murphy).. James T. Murphy was educated at Oberlin College with his brother Simon Murphy both as engineers and James T. Murphy did practice medicine as a MD in Valparaiso, Indiana where he also taught at the St. Paul's Catholic School.
